The sabbath and our rest in Christ
The Sabbath
Must Christians have fellowship on Saturday in order to keep Sabbath. Is this so?
What about Jesus did He brake the Sabbath?
What about the apostles? And which day did they meet together?
The Sabbath issue can be a stumbling block. Matt 28:1 says "Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb."
Question what happened after Sabbath (Sataurday). Both Mary's went to the tomb.
What day was it? The first day of the week. What day was that? Sunday. That was easy.
What happened next? The angel who had come down from heaven and rolled away the stone said "that Jesus had risen from the dead as He had said". This was resurrection day. That's right, Sunday is resurrection day, it's the first day of the week. Paul's letter to the Corinthians teaches us that it is right to remember the Lords death until He comes breaking bread and drinking of the cup. 1Cor 11:20-34.
So Paul gives instructions about remembering the Lords sacrifice and we also remember that the Lord wouldn't drink of the cup again until He comes to establish His kingdom.
But what day would be an appropriate day to do this? Not that I want to make some binding legalistic point but resurrection day, the first day of the week. Do we see the evidence of the early church doing that? Acts 20:7 Says "Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight."

See the covenants where made with Israel. ( see link for a more detailed look at this subject)
The dividing wall comes down in Christ alone to make one new man. Eph 2 tells us how.

We read in Genesis that God rested on the 7th day.
That the Sabbath was made for man Mark 2:27-28 and the son of man (Jesus Christ) is Lord of the Sabbath.
What does it all mean?

In James 2:10 "For whoever shall keep the whole law,
and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all." Now you may well say that that means everyone who meets for fellowship on Sunday is not keeping the whole law.
Firstly the covenants both OT & NT where given to Israel Jer 31:31
However the law born again Christians are to obey is the law of love. Jesus “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matt 22:40 Which two? Was the Sabbath keeping included anywhere in those two?

So how do we fulfill the law? Outside of Christ we can not. But in Christ, by His spirit as we lay down our lives, we can.
Jesus ultimately fulfilled the law when He laid down His life and died on the cross. (great love has no man) God demonstrates His love (Rom 5:8) this one time, for all time and for the whole world.
(Heb 9:11-18, 1Jn 2:2). But of cause the whole world will not believe.
But Christ' action did not do away with the law but fulfilled it, and by His Spirit we can fulfill it.
Paul remember said that without the law there in no knowledge of sin
If you want to put someone into bondage tell them they have to keep Sabbath.
If you want to set captives free teach them Christ and Him crucified, our dept paid at His expense.
He died for those who where under the law Gal 4:4-5. The law was given to Moses for Israel to set
them apart from other nations. God gives believers His spirit, the spirit of His son Rom 8, so we
become sons and co heirs with Christ. Adoption is something God does by making us His child and co heir with Christ. It's not something we can obtain by obeying the law of Moses.

Rest (ceasing from labour) is achieved by believing that Jesus Christ died for your sins.Heb 4:1-3.
The seventh day when God ceased from His labour has to do with what happens to those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ who have in effect entered God's rest forever. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. Our hope for rest lies in Jesus. Heb 4.
