1Timothy 1

1Tim  1 PAUL, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia–remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.16 However, for this reason, I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

When?
Where? Paul is writing to Timothy who is in Ephesus v3.
Timothy is called a "True son" in the faith. v2
The proclamation from Paul begins Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
If we know we belong to God, being His children and about The Lords work, will, and purpose. Then isn't this how we should encourage all those who are about "My Fathers business"? I believe we should.

Paul tells us he is a sent one (an Apostle) of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope. It's interesting to note that Jesus Christ is our hope, as in our blessed hope. (Titus 2:13)

Why is Paul writing?
As I urged you when I went into Macedonia–remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies.

  • Teach no other doctrine. In the book of Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized, and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’  doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. This doctrine (teaching) was foundational to the church. It would have been about how believers were to conduct themselves and what they were to believe.

Note: Jesus said whilst He was with His disciples that He is the truth, His word is truth, and that He would send the Spirit of truth from the Father to remind and guide them (and all who would believe their word of truth) in the truth. John 14:6,14:26, 16:13, 17:17-20.
Furthermore, He said " My Doctrine is not my own" John 7:16-18.
Vs 4 Nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.
Note here we read that Godly edification is in faith. Something that is in faith is something we remain true to i.e instruction or action that has been given by the word of God via the teaching of Jesus, the apostles, the scripture, by the working of the Holy Spirit to the adherents i.e those who have received sound doctrine on how to edify to do all they can to uphold that truth.
Pauls next point.
Nor give heed to fables & endless genealogies. Pakes it clear here that these oppose Godly edification. Why? Because they cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

So the apostles' doctrine would have included how believers were to have discussions that edified, rather than endless genealogies that did not.
vs 5 Paul now seems to jump to "the purpose of the commandment is" Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk
  1. Love from a pure heart
  2. Love from a pure conscience
  3. Love from sincere faith

In John 13:34 Jesus said “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Love with the right motive (to please God) is right and true, but idle talk is a sign that one has strayed.
Love is the fulfillment of the law Gal 5; Rom 13:8-14
God's love was demonstrated in that whilst we where still sinners Christ died. Rom 5:5-10

The life of Christ and the life in Christ = grace, sound doctrine, love, faith (faithfulness) Holy Spirit and truth.

to be continued......
